Black tea, leather, dusty rose, red currants and hints of animal musk keep you coming back over and over again to the 2017 Brunello di Montalcino Pomona. This gains in volume the longer it sits in the glass. It's silky-smooth and textural, mixing both savory and sweet, as wild berries blend with sour citrus and saline-infused acidity. Grippy tannins firm the experience through the finale, leaving minerals and inner florals to resonate on. The 2017 Pomona possesses a balance of structure and fruit that you don't often find in this vintage. Very nice.

Subdued aromas recalling underbrush, leather and camphor eventually take shape in the glass along with hints of tobacco. The firm palate is concentrated in texture and weight, but the fruit has already dried out, leaving hints of prune, star anise and powdered herbs framed in and densely woven, assertive tannins before a bitter, mouth-drying finish.
