The 2017 Brunello di Montalcino shows dusty dried roses, black cherries and a hint of candied citrus. It's fresh and lifted in feel, with juicy acidity that motivates the tart red berry and mineral tones. A saturation of fine tannins clenches the palate through the finale, leaving a salty flourish and hints of cranberry to linger. I fear that the structure of the 2017 will outlast its fruit. That said, a year or two of cellaring should help to soften the expression.

Aromas of cedar, leather and star anise with the barest whiff of blue flower form the rather subdued nose. The lean, assertive palate lacks fruit richness, recalling prune, ground clove and bitter notes set against close-grained tannins that leave an astringent, drying finish. Drink sooner rather than later to capture the remaining fruit.
