Initial notes of smoke, slate and crushed minerals open into brighter lemon and tangerine in this restrained, intently mineral wine. Semisweet in style, it offers tangy grapefruit acidity offset by delicately honeyed sweetness and salty finish. It should continue to open and improve through 2030 and then hold further still.

Lusciously ripe peach and Persian melon are signaled on the nose, garlanded by lily-of-the-valley perfume that wafts all the way through this wine’s impressively sustained finish. The characteristically herbal side of Scharzhofberg Riesling emerges as lingering cooling mintiness. Sweetness is overt but supportive; there is tangy juiciness; and it is impossible to resist the next fruit-filled sip. “Even when Scharzhofberger gets really ripe,” observed Mertes, “there is always a cooling element and Wiltingen wildness.” I would not be surprised to witness a mineral dimension emerging in a few years to render this bottling even more attractive.

Ripe and open with plenty of peachy fruits and a nice balance. This lacks the excitement at the finish to be rated higher. Drink now or in 2019 and 2020.
