Kanonkop Paul Sauer 2016
|Region||South Africa, Stellenbosch, Simonsberg|
This powerful yet elegant Bordeaux blend is a true South African classic. It displays concentrated aromas and opulent flavors of cassis, blackberry and licorice, with core notes of leather andtealeaf. Hints of violets, underbrush and smoke carry through on the lingering silky finish.
Blend: 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Cabernet Franc, 12% Merlot
The 2016 Paul Sauer is a blend of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot and 13% Cabernet Franc matured for 24 months in 100% new oak. It has a supremely well defined bouquet of pure blackberry, boysenberry and violet aromas, the oak seamlessly integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, perfectly pitched acidity and a caressing texture. This was actually tasted after a fantastic 1994 Paul Sauer was opened the previous night; who is to say that it will not age as well over the next quarter-century? Not only is this a superb wine, but it surely represents one of the best quality-to-price ratios in the world.
A spiced cherry aroma leads the bouquet of this wine, with supporting notes of currant, raspberry leaf and forest bramble. The palate is smooth and satiny at first, with fine-grain tannins that take over the midpalate and linger well into the medium-length finish alongside spicy tones of cocoa-dusted cherry, charred plum and a touch of blackberry leaf.
This features a charming nose, with aromas of violet and cherry blossom, while the palate offers currant and rose hip notes, accented by hints of thyme and cocoa. Vibrant and firm, showing lovely freshness and length. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Drink now through 2028. 3,400 cases made, 120 cases imported.
