Chamonix Chardonnay 2017
|Region||South Africa, Franschoek|
Light gold in color, aromas of cedar-grilled peach, apple pie, baking spice and a touch of caramel waft from the glass. It's rich and full in feel, with a pronounced toasty overlay that appropriately complements the ripe apple and pear tones on the palate, while ample acidity provides the support and overall balance. The finish is long and warming, with a lovely spicy impression that lingers.
Shows some weight, featuring charming toast augmented by ripe nectarine and lime blossom flavors, revealing hints of white raspberry. Very expressive and backed by lively acidity that imparts structure. The finish shows a bit of a grip, with salty accents. Drink now through 2027. 725 cases made, 150 cases imported.
The 2017 Chardonnay was matured 30% in new French oak and the rest in second-fill barrels for 12 months instead of 14 months. It has a fragrant, quite powerful bouquet of yellow plum, nectarine, light almond and a touch of vanilla emerging with time. The palate is slightly viscous on the entry, edging toward a more buttery style of Chardonnay that feels a little worked, and yet there is no doubting it is a delicious wine with a smooth, crowd-pleasing finish. Not an intellectual Chardonnay, but I guarantee you will finish the bottle.
