Turpino's evocative character is a tribute to three noble varieties that thrive in Maremma, fitting together like the tessera of a fine mosaic. Turpino is rich and savoury with a distinctive Mediterranean feel. Its peppery and tobacco notes and tobacco point to anything from the grill: think of a portobello mushroom with BBQ sauce, or a Vegan burger with a side of zucchini fries. A certain smokiness in roasted vegetables such as eggplants, squash and turnip particularly agrees with the darker side of this wine. At the same time, the earthy and sanguine quality of the Syrah creates a natural affinity with beetroot. Using rosemary, lavender and sage will allow you to go in different directions when deciding what to cook, as you can find similar aromatics in the glass.

The 2019 Turpino, Querciabella's top wine from Maremma, is understated and yet quite expressive. Black cherry, plum, mocha, spice and licorice are nicely lifted by a good dose of Cabernet Franc in the blend. This aromatic, layered red holds quite a bit of appeal. I would prefer to drink it over the next handful of years.
