The NV Champagne L'Ascendant Solera Extra Brut is 60% Pinot Noir and the rest Chardonnay, raised in used French oak. This bottling brings into focus a more complete picture and added depth, as you would expect from the solera. Offering notes of graham cracker, ginger, and orange peel., the palate is dry and saline, with a crystallin, pure textural feel. I like this one a lot. Drink over the next 15 or so years.

The NV Extra Brut L'Ascendant, Mouzon- Leroux's solera-style blend, is bright and focused from start to finish. Dried citrus peel, almond, spice, chamomile and dried flowers are beautifully delineated. The blend is 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay, 50% 2017 and 50% 2016 and 2014, so more of a multi-vintage blend than a true perpetual reserve or solera. Perhaps because of the base vintage or the low dosage (1 gram per liter), this edition feels a bit narrow, especially on the mid-palate and finish. Disgorged: October, 2022.
