The 2018 Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Balciana first draws you in with its brilliant golden color, and then seals the deal with its stunning bouquet. A mesmerizing mix of papaya, mango, sour melon and honeyed florals comes together with green tea and fresh tobacco leaf to keep you at the edge of the glass. It's weighty and glycerol-like in feel yet perfectly balanced, as ripe tropical fruits are contrasted by salty minerals and citrus tones. There's so much going on here and undoubtedly more to come over time, as the 2018 tapers off with persistence, leaving nuances of sweet herbs and hints of ginger. Wow. I love what the Sartarelli family has accomplished with the Balciana over the years. Once, a hedonistic expression, but now one that mixes elegance with power, character and poise.
