Dark mahogany with iodine tinged edge. Thick wine tears. Balsamic on the nose with pronounced notes of carob bean, marinades, liquorice, and raisined plums. These fragrances suddenly evolve into marked herbal fragrances, as that of Leyland cypress, dry banana leaf or spices like Madagascar pepper. Evocative of toasted flavors, caramel and honey. Elegant and long in the palate, with retronasal effect that releases raisined plums again and the complexity of raisined fruits. Indeed, a sweet wine with a perfect balance. Easy to sip and not tiring, with a lingering finish. A complex and intense wine that pairs perfectly with dark chocolate having a high cocoa percentage, such as that of Madagascar or Ethiopia. Other options include the semifreddo, or even some medium-flavored blue cheeses. This wine is produced with Pedro Ximenez grapes. After harvest, they follow sun-drying process until becoming raisins. The wine is then aged in American oak barrels. Info:No time limit for wine storage and it improves with age even in opened bottle. Store in a cool, dry place away from light and direct heat.

Wine AdvocateToro Albalá has been releasing vintage-dated, sweet wines in chronological order for a while (I have great memories of the 1972) and the 'current' release is the 1986 Don PX Gran Reserva, which is a dark, sweet and concentrated dessert wine aged in American oak casks until bottling in June 2014. It has 350 grams of residual sugar. It's extremely dark, motor oil-dense, sweet wine with notes of raisins, hints of flowers, minty with aromas of candied orange peel and herbs, really aromatic and showy. The palate is dense, with the sweetness balanced by good acidity plus spicy and chocolate flavors. 40,000 bottles and 25,000 half bottles produced.
