The large and splendid estate of Bonneau du Martray, owned by the Count de La Moriniere, is something of a rarity in Burgundy: its more than 25 acres form one continuous vineyard. What is all the more remarkable is that this great swath of vines produces two of Burgundy's finest wines - Corton (from Pinot Noir) and Corton Charlemagne (from Chardonnay). The wines are made by traditional methods: soft pressing, barrel fermentation in new oak and careful aging. These are long lived wines that need a few years to show their character.

Wine AdvocateTasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. Bonneau du Martray's Corton-Charlemagne 2011 has a mineral-driven bouquet - linear and taut, with slate and granite aromas gradually unfurling in the glass. The palate is clean and fresh with supremely well-judged acidity. Touches of apricot and mango lie in the background with the citrus element playing the main role. Beautifully balanced, this is the Corton-Charlemagne of the flight with impressive tension and persistence.

International Wine CellarPale silver-straw color. Enticing, pure aromas of lemon, white plum, wild herbs and menthol, lifted by a hawthorn topnote. Pliant, silky and fat but also fresh and precise, with complex, concentrated flavors of lemon, grapefruit pith, spices and powdered stone. Lovely classic vintage with texture, balance and depth. Finishes very long, with subtle sweetness and noteworthy clarity. A repeating note of menthol calls for patience, though.

BurghoundThere is a hint of mandarin orange to the otherwise more classic aromas of white peach, green apple and wet stone. The well-detailed and intensely stony medium weight plus flavors possess an excellent sense of underlying tension on the saline-infused, dry and well-balanced finish. I like the mid-palate concentration and while this is already delicious, this is sufficiently serious as to require 8 to 10 years of cellar time.
