The 2016 Chianti Classico Riserva is wonderfully fleshy and expressive, and yet has plenty of structural underpinnings. Dark cherry, plum, spice, menthol, licorice and mocha open up with a bit of air. The balance of fruit depth allied to a mid-weight sense of structure is just compelling. Readers will find a potent, bruising Riserva with tons of character.

Aromas of leather, underbrush and game mingle with whiffs of medicinal herbs and blue flowers. The ripe palate shows fleshy plum, vanilla and the same gamy note as the nose. Dusty tannins provide light support and a drying finish. Drink soon.
