Gaja Sperss 2014
Ruby red color. Aromas are dark, pure and very focused fruit with classic hints of tar, licorice, and a touch of truffles. On the palate, Sperss displays the austere character typical of Serralunga terroir: deep structure and lots of ripe tannins. Dense, massive yet seamless, the beautifully integrated wine possesses low acidity as well as a terrific finish.

Wine EnthusiastUnderbrush, tobacco, toasted hazelnut, menthol and grilled herb aromas slowly take shape on this focused red. On the structured elegant palate, taut refined tannins and fresh acidity provide an ageworthy framework for raspberry compote, juicy Marasca cherry, orange zest, white pepper and star anise. It already has layers of depth and loads of finesse, but hold for even more complexity. Drink 2022-2030.
James Suckling "Love the aromas of plums, flowers and dried mushrooms here. Wet soil and lavender too. Full body, firm tannins and a long, delicious finish. The combination of delicious fruit and velvety-textured tannins gives this wine form and structure."
Vinous "A dark, voluptuous beauty, the 2011 Sperss is wonderfully expressive and open today. There is plenty of Serralunga volume and power, but the vintage has given the Sperss softer contours than is typically the case. Lavender, smoke, violets, mint and succulent black cherries blossom through to the inviting, resonant finish. As good as the 2011 is, it also looks to be a relatively early maturing wine by Gaja standards."
Wine SpectatorA mix of licorice, black cherry, vanilla, spice and tobacco aromas and flavors marks this intense red, which stays fresh and long, showing balance overall. All the elements are there, just needs time. Best from 2019 through 2033.
