Condado de Haza Alenza 1996
Condado de Haza This wine is vigorous, full-bodied and very tannic to the mouth. It is flavoursome and rich in taste sensations. The tannins from the wood still blend in well with the rest of its tastes. It is a strong wine that fills the palate and will age well in the bottle. Can be drunk now and kept for many years. Alenza is only made when the quality and characteristics of the harvest permit it. Wine Spectator This polished red is shy right now, but the structure is beautiful, balanced and harmonious, with toasty oak, blueberry and accents of mineral and earth. It has good concentration, but the tannins are well integrated. Accessible now, it will only improve. Drink now through 2010. Score: 92. —Thomas Matthews, October 31, 1999.Wine Advocate The huge 1996 Alenza boasts a big, smoky, dried herb, black currant-scented bouquet with loads of truffle, black cherry, currant, and raspberry liqueur-like notes. Substantial in the mouth, with full body, firm tannin, and a long, heady finish, it should be at its finest between 2006-2016. There are 2,000 cases of the Alenza, named after both Alejandro and his wife, Esperenza. Aged 30 months in primarily new American oak, it is, as Alejandro said, "a wine for traditionists." Score: 91. —Robert Parker, April 2004.All sizes are 750mL unless otherwise noted.
